They usually start to appear around the teenage years although adults alike can experience it throughout their lives. According to the American Dermatologist Association, approximately 60 million Americans have active acne, with about 20 million that have acne severe enough to cause scarring. This includes men and women who are both affected equally by acne.
Acne is usually disfiguring to the affected areas, causing red pimples and blemishes and could lead to permanent scarring if no acne treatment is done. Many have tried various creams and medications, however, Dr. Escobedo believes acne treatment can be done through the natural power of light.
The three leading causes of acne include:
- Ineffective skin exfoliation
- Bacteria that infects the skin
- Excessive oil production from stress or hormones
Dr. Escobedo prescribes a regimen of daily skin care products to assist with reducing bacteria and improving skin exfoliation. He recommends directly reducing the oil producing glands within your skin by incorporating the South Beach IPL acne treatments.
South Beach IPL for Acne
The south beach IPL consists of three modalities:
- ALA also known as aminolevulinic acid
- BLU-U photosensitizer
- IPL flash lamp laser
By applying ALA to the skin, heavily engorged oil gland cells (one of the prime causes of acne) are made light sensitive. The application of blue light & IPL flash lamp laser to these photosensitive cells causes their destruction along with acne causing bacteria. Skin immediately looks hydrated and smooth after gradual flaking around the third day after application.
Dr. Escobedo significantly reduces all three elements causing acne with his acne protocol. Patients undergoing the “South Beach” IPL improve their acne scarring up to 20%, and experience up to 90% improvement of acne.
*Dr. Escobedo uses the following combination of aminolevulinic acid HCL: Ameluz® 10% gel with nanoemulsion technology and Levulan® Kerastick® 20% topical solution with red, blue, or multi-spectrum wavelength sources of light.
